Last Friday my wife and I arranged to meet a couple of friends at the Grocery Store in Bodcaw AR for the second seating of 2 concerts from the superb Quebe Sisters from Texas, a band I have long wanted to bring to Little Rock Folk Club but haven't as yet due to the logistical complexities of presenting a 5 piece band. Immediately upon receiving the Quebe Sisters Band email announcing their forthcoming appearance in Arkansas I consulted my Ipad Maps to find out where on Earth Bodcaw is so that I could begin planning on how to attend. Neither my wife nor I, nor our friends, were familiar with Bodcaw but the prospect of seeing the Quebes made the 2.5 hour trip a non-consideration. Internationally renowned for their Western Swing, Hot Jazz, luxurious three part harmony vocals and Texas Fiddle music, a Quebe Sisters concert is necessarily a glorious step back in musical time and Friday night was no exception... and yet, because of the location and the presenting organization, it was indeed an exception. The Family Supper Club was established three years ago to provide the Bodcaw community with musical events that would be family friendly and affordable with the goal of encouraging people to bring their kids out and expand their horizons beyond the music typically heard on radio and television. Now in its third year, the evidence at the two packed Quebe concerts is that the concert series is enjoying the broad support of both local and regional supporters; previous concerts have included well-known artists such as Charlotte Ritchie, from the Gaither Homecoming Concert Series, Award-winning Country and Gospel Pianist and Vocalist Gordon Mote, and multi-Grammy award winning Russ Taff, as well as music from local artists and bands. A visit to the Bodcaw Family Supper Club is just like stepping back in time as entire families of parents, grand parents and children sit down to a cafeteria-style pre-concert catfish dinner in the grocery store and then file into the music room for the concert. While the first concert is taking place the second show audience are eating dinner and neither concert goers nor diners are aware of each other's presence. Completing the family atmosphere magic of the occasion, the concert began with a 1940s era song from the young Daniels Family Trio, comprising Katie, Emma, and Jimmy Daniels whose ukelele driven song provided a perfect entree for the Quebe Sisters Band who were no doubt having fond recollections of their own early performances as young children. Until a few weeks I had never heard of Bodcaw, now I have not only heard of it but I have also been there! And I look forward to the next attraction that will surely draw us there again!
